Weekend Outlook – Finding Dory and Central Intelligence

There is no doubt who will be the queen at this weekend’s box office. The only real question is whether Finding Dory will have the biggest opening ever for an animated film. Last year at Thanksgiving, Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur failed to make a significant impact on the box office, though it has had good numbers through in home mediums. This weekend though, Pixar will look to rebound in a big way with a sequel to one of their most successful films of all time. See this weekend’s offerings and my projections after the jump.

Finding Dory

Fandango is saying that Finding Dory has passed Minions as the top pre-selling animated film of all time, and according to pre-release tracking, Dory looks like it might have Pixar’s biggest opening ever, and possibly the biggest opening ever for an animated film.
When Finding Nemo was released in 2003, it became Pixar’s highest-grossing film with nearly $340 million at the box office. That record was held until the release of Toy Story 3 in 2010. That movie also set Pixar’s opening weekend record, with over $110 million in receipts. However, according to the prognosticators over at Box Office Pro that total could be easily eclipsed by Finding Dory, which they have tracking over $130 million. This number would also put Dory ahead of Shrek the Third, which currently holds the all-time animated film opening with $121.6 million. We could very easily have a record breaker on our hands.

While 13 years have passed since the release of Finding Nemo, the sequel is set a year after the events of the first film, when Ellen Degeneres’ character Dory has flashes of memory that remind her that she has parents. This sends her, along with Marlon and Nemo, on a quest across the ocean to find them. In addition to the returning cast members, the film co-stars the voices of Ed O’Neill, Idris Elba, Diane Keaton and Sigourney Weaver.

If reviews are any indication, Finding Dory is off to a good start, as the film has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even if the movie doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor, most still call the film a success. Will you be one of those people checking out Finding Dory this weekend? The film marks the first of a series of sequels that Pixar will be releasing over the next few years. Hopefully, the quality of Dory is a good sign for those of us waiting patiently for The Incredibles 2.

Central intelligence

The other notable release of the weekend is Central Intelligence starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The story follows a one-time bullied geek who grew up to be a lethal CIA agent (Johnson), coming home for his high school reunion. Claiming to be on a top-secret case, he enlists the help of the former “big man on campus” (Hart), now an accountant who misses his glory days. But before the staid numbers-cruncher realizes what he’s getting into, it’s too late to get out, as his increasingly unpredictable new friend drags him through a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get them both killed in more ways than he can count.

This looks funny. I’m a fan of Kevin Hart’s comedy, but he has had mixed results with this type of buddy film. Central Intelligence feels a bit like another Kevin Hart series, Ride Along. The original preformed well with an opening weekend over 41 million in January 2014, but the sequel’s draw could not compare only garnering 35 million earlier this year. Also, Get Hard with Will Ferrell was a moderate success opening to just under $34 million in March of 2015 but by the end of its run, it had grossed over $90 million domestically. I’m afraid that because of its similarity, we may see some diminishing returns.

However, in a summer packed with sequels, maybe this original story is exactly what some are looking for. I’m predicting that we will see Central Intelligence come in far behind Dory this weekend bringing in between 30 and 35 million. What do you think? What movie are you planning to see this weekend? 1. I have been excited about this sequel and the return of my favorite Pixar The Incredibles. Central Intellegence sounds like my type of movie. I am a fan of buddy action comedy, with Bad Boys 2 being one of my all time favorites. If I can find someone who wants to go, I will see either or both. Thanks for the posting.

    1. I’m hoping to see Finding Dory this afternoon with the kids.

If you are a fan of buddy action comedies, make sure to see The Nice Guys. I just saw it last night and am working on my review. It is hilarious.
