Finding Dory
While 13 years have passed since the release of Finding Nemo, the sequel is set a year after the events of the first film, when Ellen Degeneres’ character Dory has flashes of memory that remind her that she has parents. This sends her, along with Marlon and Nemo, on a quest across the ocean to find them. In addition to the returning cast members, the film co-stars the voices of Ed O’Neill, Idris Elba, Diane Keaton and Sigourney Weaver.
If reviews are any indication, Finding Dory is off to a good start, as the film has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even if the movie doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor, most still call the film a success. Will you be one of those people checking out Finding Dory this weekend? The film marks the first of a series of sequels that Pixar will be releasing over the next few years. Hopefully, the quality of Dory is a good sign for those of us waiting patiently for The Incredibles 2.
Central intelligence
The other notable release of the weekend is Central Intelligence starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The story follows a one-time bullied geek who grew up to be a lethal CIA agent (Johnson), coming home for his high school reunion. Claiming to be on a top-secret case, he enlists the help of the former “big man on campus” (Hart), now an accountant who misses his glory days. But before the staid numbers-cruncher realizes what he’s getting into, it’s too late to get out, as his increasingly unpredictable new friend drags him through a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get them both killed in more ways than he can count.
This looks funny. I’m a fan of Kevin Hart’s comedy, but he has had mixed results with this type of buddy film. Central Intelligence feels a bit like another Kevin Hart series, Ride Along. The original preformed well with an opening weekend over 41 million in January 2014, but the sequel’s draw could not compare only garnering 35 million earlier this year. Also, Get Hard with Will Ferrell was a moderate success opening to just under $34 million in March of 2015 but by the end of its run, it had grossed over $90 million domestically. I’m afraid that because of its similarity, we may see some diminishing returns.
However, in a summer packed with sequels, maybe this original story is exactly what some are looking for. I’m predicting that we will see Central Intelligence come in far behind Dory this weekend bringing in between 30 and 35 million. What do you think? What movie are you planning to see this weekend? I have been excited about this sequel and the return of my favorite Pixar The Incredibles. Central Intellegence sounds like my type of movie. I am a fan of buddy action comedy, with Bad Boys 2 being one of my all time favorites. If I can find someone who wants to go, I will see either or both. Thanks for the posting.
I’m hoping to see Finding Dory this afternoon with the kids.
If you are a fan of buddy action comedies, make sure to see The Nice Guys. I just saw it last night and am working on my review. It is hilarious.
